Track highlights

About this release

McKinley Morganfield, known professionally as Muddy Waters, was born in April 1913. He was an American blues singer-songwriter and musician who is often cited as the “father of modern Chicago Blues” and an important figure on the post-war blues scene.

In the early 1950s, Muddy Waters and his band (which included Otis Spann on piano) recorded several blues classics, some with the bassist and songwriter Willie Dixon. These songs included “Hoochie Coochie Man”, “I Just Want to Make Love to You”, and “I’m Ready”.

This set brought to you at mid-price was originally recorded for the WBCN-FM, at Paul’s Mall, Boston, Massachusetts for ‘Muddy Waters Day’ on 15th June 1976. His fine band features Pinetop Perkins (piano), ‘Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin (guitar), Calvin ‘Fuzz’ Jones (bass), Luther ‘Guitar Jr’ Johnson (guitar), Jerry Portnoy (harmonica) and Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith (drums).

Muddy’s performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960 was recorded and released as his first live album, and is included as a bonus CD with this release.

Muddy Waters died in April 1983.
