Bobby Bare is an American country music singer and songwriter, best known for the songs "Detroit City" and "500 Miles Away from Home".
Bare decided to become a singer after leaving the army in the early 60s. He started recording songs for a number of California labels and was soon touring with the likes of Roy Orbison and Bobby Darin. Meanwhile, his songs were being recorded by a number of artists and three of his tunes were featured in the Chubby Checker movie Teenage Millionaire.
His big break came when Chet Atkins signed him to RCA Victor. The single, "Detroit City" reached No. 6 on the Country chart and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Country and Western Recording. A surge of hits followed, including "500 Miles Away from Home and Ian Tyson's "Four Strong Winds". He left RCA Victor for Mercury at the end of the 60s but returned after two years. His biggest hits during this time were written by his friend Shel Silverstein and included "Alimony" (1975) and "The Winner" (1976), and Paul Craft's "Drop Kick Me Jesus” itself a 1976 Grammy nominee, all of which appear on this package.
Bare was inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2013.
